MLB Cost Per Win

This animated bar chart shows how much each team in baseball spends in salary per win. The lower the cost, the better the return on investment. Certain teams in major league baseball are very good at getting value from their players. In the last 20 years, the Oakland A's have been legendary at finding talent at a low cost and getting the most from their salary. In the past 20 years, they have gone to the playoffs 10 times despite being one of the lowest spenders in baseball.

The A's and The Rays

This is one of the rare charts where you want to be at the bottom of the list. If you watch the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Rays, you can see that they are consistently at the bottom of the chart and are spending the least per win among the 30 teams in baseball. The difference between the bottom and the top of the chart is vast with some teams at the top, such as the Yankees, the Dodgers, and the Red Sox, spending well over $2 million per win in recent years.

Big Spenders

The usual suspects are at the top of the list among the big spenders. Since the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox usually have the biggest salaries, you would expect them to be at the top of this list as well. However, you see some unusual names at the top of this animated chart, such as the Detroit Tigers. They don't have the largest total salary in baseball, but unfortunately they often have the least wins. This is putting them at the top of this chart sheerly because they aren't getting many wins for what they're spending.
